Applying for Study Abroad Student visa – What you should know?

US Visas

The F1 Visa is the most common type of student visa. It is also offered to the people who go on an exchange program. The M1 Visa is reserved for vocational and technical schools.

Canadian Visas

A Canadian study permit is mostly availed for those who will stay in the country till graduation. If your course lasts for the maximum period of six months, there’s no need to ask for such a permit.

UK Visas

The Tier 4 (General) visa is given for students aged 16+ and Tier 4 (Child) student visa for children between 4 and 15 years old who have been offered any course at a UK educational institution and educated at independent fee-paying schools respectively.

Health Insurance

Considering that medical insurance is mandatory in most countries and is further expensive than India, a student requires health insurance to cover medical expenses. The student should submit the proof of the same from the home country.

Academic Eligibility

The academic eligibility is important for the visa and college of your choice. Your GPA and the test scores from the GMAT, TOEFL, LSAT, GRE, SAT, or ACT are included here.

Financial Stability

Proof of financial stability is necessary for a successful visa acceptance. It ensures that you have the capacity to survive in a foreign country. A large bank account balance is not sufficient enough to show financial support. Financial support from the family members, employers, or even the sponsors is the most common source.

Education loans are also considered as a major source of funding for many students. Some countries like Canada, with the GIC account or Germany, with the Blocked Account system, require students to demonstrate financial preparedness for first year’s living expenses by depositing a fixed amount of finances into a bank account within their country before applying for the student visa.

Basic documentation needed for a student visa

The documents required for a student visa may vary from one country to another. Here’s a common list of documents necessary for applying for the student visa:

  • Form I-20 / Offer Letter from the College / University
  • SEVIS I-901 receipt of payment / Visa fee payment proof
  • College / University first-year / first-semester fee payment proofs
  • Photographs as per embassy specifications
  • Accommodation plan details
  • Transcripts / Copies of all past education completed
  • Work experience documents
  • Affidavits / Proof of financial support
  • Proof of funds to pay for living, tuition, and travel for one year
  • IT Returns & Income Proofs of sponsors
  • A signed passport that’s valid at least six months from the entry date
  • Copy of marriage certificate or birth certificate where applicable
